International and Indigenous Languages Program Update

Delayed Start:

We have been overwhelmed by the interest in the International and Indigenous Languages Program. Thank you for registering your children!  Unfortunately, we have to delay the start of the following languages while we complete the hiring process for additional language instructors:

Barrie - Spanish Grades 4-8 (planned start date: Jan 12)

Bradford - Mandarin (planned start date: Jan 12); Dari (planned start date: Jan 12)

Learn a new language for free!

The Simcoe County District School Board offers children in grades 1 to 8 an opportunity to learn and/or maintain a language other than French or English. Whether you enrol your children in this program to learn a new language, understand a new culture or to extend their knowledge of their first language, every student can benefit from this program.

Eligibility:
Students enrolled in grades 1 to 8 are eligible to enrol in this program.

Languages:
Barrie: Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Mandarin, Ojibwe, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Urdu
Bradford: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese

Class Schedule:
Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting September 15, 2018  

Class dates: Sep 15, 22, 29; Oct 13, 20, 27; Nov 3, 10, 17, 24; Dec 1, 8, 15; Jan 12, 19, 26; Feb 2, 9, 23; March 2, 23, 30; April 6, 13, 27; May 4, 11

Inclement Weather:

In the event of class cancellation due to inclement weather we will post this information on our website as well as Twitter and Facebook.


Locations:
Barrie: Learning Centre, Barrie, 320 Bayfield Street, Bayfield Mall (Highway 400 and Bayfield Street)
Bradford: Learning Centre, Bradford, 157 Holland Street East, Suite 200, 2nd floor

Cost:

There is no cost for this program; however, we must have a minimum number of students per language in order to offer the class.  Most classes fill quickly and are established on a first come, first served basis.

Volunteer:

If you are a high school student interested in volunteering with the International Language Program, submit a resume and cover letter to Amanda Hickling at ahickling@scdsb.on.ca Please specify the proficiency in the language that you are interested in helping with. A reference from your school will be required. We thank all applicants; however, only successful candidates will be contacted for an interview.
