SCDSB secondary schools and adult learning centres closed Wednesday, Dec. 11 should a tentative agreement not be reached

12/06/2019

On Dec. 6, the provincial branch of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) announced their intent to proceed with rotating one-day walkouts in a number of school boards across Ontario, with the first occurring on Wednesday, Dec. 11. The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has been identified as one of the boards that will be affected on Wednesday, Dec. 11. In the SCDSB, OSSTF represents permanent and occasional secondary teachers and continuing education instructors.

Should a tentative agreement not be reached, all SCDSB secondary schools and adult learning centres will be closed to students on Wednesday, Dec. 11, as there would not be sufficient supervision to ensure student safety. All Grade 7 and 8 students at Elmvale District High School and Stayner Collegiate Institute will still report to school for classes as usual.

All secondary out-of-school activities will also be cancelled on Dec. 11.

Please note that all SCDSB elementary schools will remain open to students on Dec. 11.

For ongoing updates, visit the labour updates page on the SCDSB website, or follow us on social media (Twitter: @SCDSB_Schools or Facebook: www.facebook.com/SCDSB).

Thank you for your understanding.

2018 Annual winter coat drive a success, thanks to the Orillia and area community!http://www.thelearningcentres.com/about-us/news/school-news/332018 Annual winter coat drive a success, thanks to the Orillia and area community!
In late 2018, the Orillia Learning Centre, in partnership with Fabricare Cleaning Center, Simcoe Shores SS and the Champlain Seniors Service Club, hosted the 9th Annual Winter Coat Drive. Each year, the staff and students are amazed by the kindness of the residents of this city and surrounding area. The warm winter coats, snow pants and even hand-knit mitts, scarves and hats are donated in abundance by our generous community. Over seven hundred coats were distributed during this year’s drive!

We are so grateful for this community connection. We want to thank those that donated, that advertised, Fabricare Cleaning Center for the donation of their facility, utilities and supplies, the Champlain Seniors Service Club for volunteering to pick up and drop off coats and the Simcoe Shores Secondary School (Orillia) students who volunteered to wash the coats. Wihlidal Family Chiropractic also graciously collected coats from the community, and the Orillia & District Agricultural Society donated racks to display all of the coats.

Thank you to our media partners, especially Orillia Matters, Orillia Today, CTV News (Barrie), KICX 106 and the Communications Department at the Simcoe County District School Board. Getting the word out is so important and we can always count on them to do an amazing job! A special shout out to the Coldwater Bantam and Junior Hockey Teams for their donation of winter coats and to the Coldwater Bowling Alley for inspiring the challenge.

So please, keep saving your warm winter coats. We will be looking forward to the 10th Annual Winter Coat Drive! You can begin dropping them off Oct. 15, 2019. Distribution will begin Oct. 28, 2019. Please keep spreading the word, so that donations continue and so that those who are in need are aware of this very worthwhile community project.

Sincerely, Staff and students of the Learning Centres, Orillia, Simcoe Shores SS and members of the Champlain Seniors Service Club
